SUMMARY:COMING TO AMERICA concert
DESCRIPTION:COMING TO AMERICA\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 26\, 2025 | 7:30PM\nPRE-CONCERT CONDUCTOR’S TALK AT 6:30PM\nSponsored by Kip Connor & Linh Vong. Pipa soloist is sponsored by Bin Wu and Family in recognition of the Chinese American Association of Lexington. \nHewitt | The Battle of Trenton\nWu\, Wang\, Liu | Little Sisters of the Prairie\nWu\, Liu | Spring River Flowers and Moonlight Night\n-Cao Yue\, pipa\nDecruck | Symphonie Orientale\nÓ Riada | Mise Éire \nOur season finale opens with James Hewitt’s The Battle of Trenton and explores the attitudes\, mistakes and reasons people emigrated to America. Those stories are represented through the music immigrants brought with them\, enriching our nation despite the challenges they faced. While the stories are as varied as was America’s attitude toward immigrants\, these stories are important because all those who came to America looked for a new beginning and hope for the future — which has been America’s promise.

Osborne has conversations with acclaimed historians\, reenactors and educators to provide insights into 11 Black patriots who played significant roles in the American Revolution. Five of those patriots were active combatants on April 19\, 1775. Three of those soldiers were Lexington residents and two were Afro-Indigenous soldiers from Natick who fired on retreating British Regulars near the Lexington Green. \nIn the Venus Roe episode\, public historian Margaret Micholet and curator Stacey Fraser present the unique viewpoint of Venus Roe who was an enslaved servant at the home of Smitheren Reed and Captain James Reed of Woburn District (now Burlington). On April 19\, 1775 the Reed home sheltered John Hancock and Samuel Adams and served as a temporary prison for up to twelve British Regulars. \n

SUMMARY:Douglass Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Our event\, organized for Black History Month by the Douglass Day organization (DouglassDay.org)\, will be one of about 100 being held across the country and involving thousands of people collaborating in person and online on digital transcriptions aimed at making Black history primary research materials more widely available. This year\, the transcriptions will focus on the materials of the Colored Conventions Project from the University of Delaware. These state and national conventions\, held from the 1830s through Reconstruction\, allowed Black abolitionists and leaders to work toward advancing the legal and civil rights of Black Americans in the 19th century and provided opportunities for leaders like Douglass to rise to prominence. \nThe event will be held from 12-3 pm and include a short transcription tutorial\, viewing of the national Douglass Day broadcast\, several periods of transcription activity\, displays\, and short presentations by local historians on the Colored Conventions\, Frederick Douglass’ visit to Lexington\, Black women honored on the Women’s Monument\, and more. We will also have a birthday cake to celebrate Frederick Douglass’ chosen birthday of February 14. We invite students and educators from local schools as well as the general public to attend. All are welcome. \nSponsors: Lexington Lyceum Advocates\, Lexington History Museums\, LexSeeHer\, Association of Black Citizens of Lexington.  Register your attendance: https://www.lexlyceum.org/events/
