DESCRIPTION:“Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum. \nAlan Dawson was an extraordinary jazz drummer\, percussionist\, and teacher who inspired countless students to pursue professional music and instruction. His accomplishments were many: He played with the Army Dance Band at Fort Dix during the Korean War. He taught at Berklee College of Music\, and offered private lessons in his own home. His drumming was featured on albums with artists such as Quincy Jones\, Clifford Brown\, Dexter Gordon\, and Dave Brubeck. He formed his own band\, the Alan Dawson Quartet\, and had a posthumous album\, Waltzin’ with Flo\, released in 2000. Most importantly\, his teaching methods are still being used today by his students who continue to lift up the next generation of jazz musicians. \nJoin us as we welcome family\, former students\, and music enthusiasts to honor Dawson’s legacy in Lexington. Enjoy live music from Chris Neville\, Ron Mahdi\, and John Ramsay\, followed by an interactive celebration of Dawson’s career led by Dawson’s daughter Deborah Mullins and student Mike Powers. People often create new ideas by recognizing patterns in past experiences and applying them in new situations. Modern AI systems attempt something similar\, but they still struggle to produce stories and ideas with the depth\, flexibility\, and originality of human creativity. \nUsing familiar examples\, Dr. Wang will discuss how AI retrieves information\, makes analogies\, and generates new content. He will also explore why AI-generated writing can sometimes feel repetitive or flat\, and how future AI systems and agents might become more thoughtful\, creative\, and useful. \nNo technical background is required. The talk is intended for anyone interested in how AI works and how it may shape the future of human creativity. \nAttendance is on a first-come basis. Registering below allows us to plan for headcount and keep you updated in case of any changes. \nAbout our speaker: \nHaixun Wang is an ACM Fellow\, IEEE Fellow\, Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Data Engineering Bulletin\, a trustee on the board of VLDB\, and an affiliate professor at the University of Washington. He is currently the VP of Engineering and Head of AI at EvenUp\, where he focuses on leveraging LLMs and generative AI for legal and medical document understanding and generation\, building Copilot-like support for lawyers\, and advancing litigation workflows. Prior to EvenUp\, he held leadership roles in AI\, applied science\, NLP\, and knowledge bases at Instacart\, WeWork\, Amazon\, and Meta. Before that\, he was a researcher in the labs of Microsoft\, Google\, and IBM. Dr. Wang has published over 200 research papers in top international journals and conference proceedings. His work has been recognized with several prestigious awards\, including the 10-Year ICDE Influential Paper Award (2024)\, the ICDE Best Paper Award (2015)\, the ICDM 10-Year Best Paper Award (2013)\, and the Best Paper Award at ER (2009). \nPresented in partnership with the Youth STEAM Initiative (YSI ) and UMass Boston. \nYSI is a nonprofit organization 5013c founded by Wei Ding during the Covid pandemic to provide free mentorship to students and free computational and arts services to our local communities. \nThis program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation.

The event runs from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and includes the Reenactment of Anna Harrington’s 1769 Spinning Protest at 11:00 a.m.\, followed immediately by the formal ceremony honoring the LexSeeHer 2026 Women’s Visibility Banner Honorees. Throughout the event\, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, everyone is invited to join the Stitch-A-Thon. Share supplies from LexSeeHer\, or bring your own as we collectively share many forms of stitching to pay tribute to the importance of textiles in America’s history. Anna and 45 “Ladies” spun their own yarn as an act of defiance against the King\, refusing to pay unwelcome taxes. Whether as a form of resistance\, to meet practical needs of survival\, to express ourselves\, or to communicate\, textiles have played a critical role in America’s history. We will see if our efforts on August 29 match the yardage of the 1769 women and girls who helped change the trajectory of our lives.

Similarly to last year\, students will showcase their imagination by creating a short film that will be shown to family and friends at the end of the week. Under the guidance of our skilled staff\, students will learn the basics of acting\, improvisation\, and camera skills in order to bring their visions to life both during the class and in future endeavors. \nThe action-packed week cultivates the students creativity in a positive environment and allows them to explore their creative potential. The culmination of their effort premieres at a celebratory party with family\, friends\, and popcorn! \nAs part of the class\, every child will learn about a Sony PXW x70 camera\, tripods\, boom mics\, lighting\, the green screen\, as well as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro editing software. There will also be an opportunity for them to create their own project\, either solo or with other campers. \nThe class runs from Monday\, August 10th to Friday\, August 14th from 10:00am (drop-off as early as 9:00am) to 3:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Hancock Church’s Candlelight Garden concerts return this July! On July 15th at 7:30 we welcome Alastair Moock and Sean Staples for an evening of the music of John Prine. \nThe Grammy Award winning Alastair Moock is joined by Sean Staples as they perform songs by the legendary John Prine and talk about his impact on their own song writing and musical life. Prine was one of the greatest song writers in the latter half of the 20th century and his impact on American music is immeasurable. With songs like Paradise and Angel in Montgomery\, Prine was a songwriter’s songwriter and his work informed several generations of musicians. Come hear these two local legends sing their interpretations of these timeless songs. \nJoin us in our beautiful courtyard garden for these intimate shows performed in the round. Surrounded by candlelight\, with complimentary lemonade at intermission\, these concerts are magical evening of live music in the heart of Lexington. Seats are general admission and doors open at 7:00.

His 1781 civil lawsuit for battery led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. \nMusic\, food and storytellers will be performing outside at noon and 1. \nCome early for colonial history and music and stay for the concert by Rhythms of Ghana. \n  \n
