SUMMARY:Douglass Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Our event\, organized for Black History Month by the Douglass Day organization (DouglassDay.org)\, will be one of about 100 being held across the country and involving thousands of people collaborating in person and online on digital transcriptions aimed at making Black history primary research materials more widely available. This year\, the transcriptions will focus on the materials of the Colored Conventions Project from the University of Delaware. These state and national conventions\, held from the 1830s through Reconstruction\, allowed Black abolitionists and leaders to work toward advancing the legal and civil rights of Black Americans in the 19th century and provided opportunities for leaders like Douglass to rise to prominence. \nThe event will be held from 12-3 pm and include a short transcription tutorial\, viewing of the national Douglass Day broadcast\, several periods of transcription activity\, displays\, and short presentations by local historians on the Colored Conventions\, Frederick Douglass’ visit to Lexington\, Black women honored on the Women’s Monument\, and more. We will also have a birthday cake to celebrate Frederick Douglass’ chosen birthday of February 14. We invite students and educators from local schools as well as the general public to attend. All are welcome. \nSponsors: Lexington Lyceum Advocates\, Lexington History Museums\, LexSeeHer\, Association of Black Citizens of Lexington.  Register your attendance: https://www.lexlyceum.org/events/

SUMMARY:Vintage Romance: Valentine's Cake Decorating Class with Cake Niche (Night 1)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Valentine’s Day with buttercream\, romance\, and a whole lot of vintage flair! In this hands-on cake decorating class\, you’ll learn how to create a Lambeth-style (also known as “vintage”) heart cake—think elegant piping\, frills\, swags\, and classic over-the-top charm. \nEach participant will receive a prepared 5 inch two-layer heart-shaped cake\, ready to decorate from start to finish. When you sign up\, you’ll choose the flavor (chocolate or vanilla) and filling (chocolate mousse\, whipped cream\, or raspberry mousse). \nDuring class\, you’ll get to choose your frosting colors and decoration style\, making your cake totally unique—soft and romantic\, bold and dramatic\, or anything in between. We’ll cover piping techniques\, design ideas\, and tips for achieving that iconic vintage Lambeth look\, whether you’re a beginner or just looking to refine your skills. \nYou’ll leave with a beautifully decorated heart cake\, new decorating techniques\, and the perfect edible Valentine (for a loved one… or yourself). No prior decorating experience required—just come ready to have fun and get a little sweet! \nAbout Cake Niche: \nHi I’m Anna! I’ve worked as a cake artist across the U.S.\, from Boston to Wisconsin to Los Angeles\, and now I’m thrilled to own Cake Niche in Lexington Center. While in Los Angeles\, I had the incredible opportunity to create cakes for celebrities such as Pink\, Ken Jeong\, and Tyler Florence of The Great Food Truck Race. After years of traveling and honing my craft\, I decided to move back to the Boston area to be closer to my family and because I truly missed the charm and community of New England. Having grown up in Somerville and Winchester\, Massachusetts\, I’m especially excited to bring my passion for cake artistry back home and share it with the Lexington community. \nPlease note: if for any reason a class needs to be cancelled\, we will postpone to another date. Refunds will be given to those unable to make the new date.
