SUMMARY:Book Chat on Friends Divided with Historian Gordon Wood
DESCRIPTION:One of the most iconic duos in Revolutionary history\, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson famously worked together through the Continental Congress before feuding for decades. Later\, they miraculously rekindled a fierce friendship before dying on the same day\, 50 years to the day of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. Their relationship allows us a unique look at how the American Revolution affected those of different social classes and ideologies\, and how such disparate ideas were able to exist side by side in the new Republic. \nIn our last Book Chat of this season\, join award-winning Revolutionary War historian Gordon S. Wood in an interactive discussion about these fascinating founding fathers. Reading the book is never required\, but adds to the experience! \n  \nFree\, but registration is required!

DESCRIPTION:This is a not to be missed Ukrainian musical event in its first Boston-area performance! \nThe Ukrainian Music Initiative (UMI) was launched this past February to a standing room only audience at the historic Shevchenko Scientific Society in NYC. The exciting musical program is centered around two of UMI’s guiding principles: the sounding of Ukrainian voices and the interpersonal connections that music can build. \nThe live concert will include classic and contemporary songs by Ihor Sonevytsky\, Yakiv Stepovy\, Kryrylo Stestenko\, and Stefania Turkewich\, their settings of texts by Ivan Franko\, Oleksandr Oles’\, Lesia Ukrainka\, Mykola Voron\, and Vira Vovk. \nThe program will also include piano and cello pieces by Mykola Lysenko\, Valentyn Silvestrov and Andrii Didorenko\, a solo piano piece by Serhiy Bortkiewicz and Olga Zaitseva-Herz’s setting of Taras Shevchenko for voice\, cello and piano. \nConcert attendees will experience the wonder that is Ukrainian classical music! \nAbout UMI (www.ukrainianmusicinitiative.org)\nUMI\, a new musical celebration\, was created to elevate Ukrainian classical music to its rightful place in the Western canon and to fill a significant gap in the US’ cultural landscape. This is being accomplished by having skilled and knowledgeable musicians of Ukrainian heritage perform Ukrainian music in accessible venues on a regular basis.\nA collaboration of three independent artists\, UMI consists of NYC-based contralto Vira Slywotzky\, cellist Valeriya Sholokhova\, and pianist Pavlo Gintov. All of whom have a longstanding history of commitment to Ukrainian music and are sought after performers. Joining them in their mission are musicologist Leah Batstone and entrepreneur Alex Gamota. An educational series is also being developed. \nUMI is presented by Vira + Friends\, a non-profit corporation under the auspices of the Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston\, a 501(c)(3).

SUMMARY:Primavera: Spring Produce Italian-Style with Chef Claudia Catalano
DESCRIPTION:Join local chef and food writer Claudia Catalano for an Italian-inspired\, springtime cooking demonstration. Participants will learn the techniques and recipes used to create simple dishes that combine seasonal produce with classic Italian flavors.\nUsing the best of New England’s early spring harvest\, Claudia will guide you through proper produce selection\, efficient knife skills\, and professional tips that will up your cooking game. You will nibble on Italian snacks while learning how to make asparagus and pecorino fritters\, a savory appetizer that her Sicilian grandmother often made. Next\, we’ll get busy with gnocchi\, the beloved Italian potato dumplings. Fresh herbs—some of the first produce to emerge after New England’s long\, cold winter—will be transformed into a bright green sauce for the dumplings. Lastly\, you’ll learn a special technique for making flakey pie dough. The buttery pastry will form the base of a sweet ricotta and rhubarb crostata.\nCome hungry! Plenty of each dish will be prepared in advance so that everyone can enjoy a generous taste of Claudia’s cooking. You will leave with printed recipes\, a ton of new kitchen knowledge\, and hopefully some new friends!\nAbout Claudia:\nClaudia Catalano is a chef\, writer\, and food photographer who left a career in branding to earn a Master of Liberal Arts in Gastronomy from Boston University in 2016. She is a proud recipient of the Julia Child Teaching Assistant award in the Culinary Arts Program\, where she worked with award-winning chefs\, including the legendary Jacques Pepin. She continued her involvement with BU by becoming a part-time faculty member\, while simultaneously operating her own personal chef business under the name Wild Carrot. She also teaches cooking classes at Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and various other community organizations. Her recipes\, stories\, and photographs have been featured regularly in The Boston Globe and Edible Boston. She now works as an editor and recipe developer at America’s Test Kitchen in Boston’s Seaport District. A descendant of Sicilian immigrants on both sides of her family\, her food often evokes the memories of her mother and grandmother. \nPlease note: this is a cooking demonstration class. Attendees will be served a sampling of each dish prepared during class.\nIf for any reason a class needs to be cancelled\, we will postpone the class to another date. SUMMARY:COMING TO AMERICA concert
DESCRIPTION:COMING TO AMERICA\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 26\, 2025 | 7:30PM\nPRE-CONCERT CONDUCTOR’S TALK AT 6:30PM\nSponsored by Kip Connor & Linh Vong. Pipa soloist is sponsored by Bin Wu and Family in recognition of the Chinese American Association of Lexington. \nHewitt | The Battle of Trenton\nWu\, Wang\, Liu | Little Sisters of the Prairie\nWu\, Liu | Spring River Flowers and Moonlight Night\n-Cao Yue\, pipa\nDecruck | Symphonie Orientale\nÓ Riada | Mise Éire \nOur season finale opens with James Hewitt’s The Battle of Trenton and explores the attitudes\, mistakes and reasons people emigrated to America. Those stories are represented through the music immigrants brought with them\, enriching our nation despite the challenges they faced. While the stories are as varied as was America’s attitude toward immigrants\, these stories are important because all those who came to America looked for a new beginning and hope for the future — which has been America’s promise.
