SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion of the Black Patriots of Lexington: Venus Roe
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 242nd Anniversary of Massachusetts Emancipation Day\, aka Quock Walker Day \nQuock Walker was enslaved in Barre\, MA. His 1781 civil lawsuit for battery led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. Venus Roe was enslaved by Jonas Roe in Lexington. At about three years old\, she was gifted to Smitheren Reed of Woburn District. Venus Roe was emancipated in the wake of the third Quock Walker case\, Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Nathaniel Jennison. \nJoin the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL) and Cary Library for a virtual screening of the Venus Roe episode of the Black Patriots of Lexington YouTube series\, a co-production of ABCL\, LexMedia and Tricons 2 Red Tails. The Black Patriots of Lexington is a nine-part series where Sean D. Osborne has conversations with acclaimed historians\, reenactors and educators to provide insights into 11 Black patriots who played significant roles in the American Revolution. Five of those patriots were active combatants on April 19\, 1775. Three of those soldiers were Lexington residents\, and two were Afro-Indigenous soldiers from Natick who fired on retreating British Regulars near the Lexington Green. \nIn the Venus Roe episode\, public historian Margaret Micholet and curator Stacey Fraser present the unique viewpoint of Venus Roe\, who was an enslaved servant at the home of Smitheren Reed and Captain James Reed of Woburn District (now Burlington). On April 19\, 1775\, the Reed home sheltered John Hancock and Samuel Adams and served as a temporary prison for up to twelve British Regulars. \nA Q&A will follow with Stacey Fraser\, Margaret Micholet and Sean D. Osborne. \nRegistration is required. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL).

Five of those patriots were active combatants on April 19\, 1775. Three of those soldiers were Lexington residents and two were Afro-Indigenous soldiers from Natick who fired on retreating British Regulars near the Lexington Green. \nIn the Venus Roe episode\, public historian Margaret Micholet and curator Stacey Fraser present the unique viewpoint of Venus Roe who was an enslaved servant at the home of Smitheren Reed and Captain James Reed of Woburn District (now Burlington). On April 19\, 1775 the Reed home sheltered John Hancock and Samuel Adams and served as a temporary prison for up to twelve British Regulars. \n

SUMMARY:Book Chat on Friends Divided with Historian Gordon Wood
DESCRIPTION:One of the most iconic duos in Revolutionary history\, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson famously worked together through the Continental Congress before feuding for decades. Later\, they miraculously rekindled a fierce friendship before dying on the same day\, 50 years to the day of the Declaration of Independence’s signing. Their relationship allows us a unique look at how the American Revolution affected those of different social classes and ideologies\, and how such disparate ideas were able to exist side by side in the new Republic. \nIn our last Book Chat of this season\, join award-winning Revolutionary War historian Gordon S. Wood in an interactive discussion about these fascinating founding fathers. Reading the book is never required\, but adds to the experience! \n  \nFree\, but registration is required!

SUMMARY:The Ukrainian Music Initiative Presents: Introductions. A musical celebration of Ukraine's vibrant classical music tradition!
DESCRIPTION:This is a not to be missed Ukrainian musical event in its first Boston-area performance! \nThe Ukrainian Music Initiative (UMI) was launched this past February to a standing room only audience at the historic Shevchenko Scientific Society in NYC. The exciting musical program is centered around two of UMI’s guiding principles: the sounding of Ukrainian voices and the interpersonal connections that music can build. \nThe live concert will include classic and contemporary songs by Ihor Sonevytsky\, Yakiv Stepovy\, Kryrylo Stestenko\, and Stefania Turkewich\, their settings of texts by Ivan Franko\, Oleksandr Oles’\, Lesia Ukrainka\, Mykola Voron\, and Vira Vovk. \nThe program will also include piano and cello pieces by Mykola Lysenko\, Valentyn Silvestrov and Andrii Didorenko\, a solo piano piece by Serhiy Bortkiewicz and Olga Zaitseva-Herz’s setting of Taras Shevchenko for voice\, cello and piano. \nConcert attendees will experience the wonder that is Ukrainian classical music! \nAbout UMI (www.ukrainianmusicinitiative.org)\nUMI\, a new musical celebration\, was created to elevate Ukrainian classical music to its rightful place in the Western canon and to fill a significant gap in the US’ cultural landscape. This is being accomplished by having skilled and knowledgeable musicians of Ukrainian heritage perform Ukrainian music in accessible venues on a regular basis.\nA collaboration of three independent artists\, UMI consists of NYC-based contralto Vira Slywotzky\, cellist Valeriya Sholokhova\, and pianist Pavlo Gintov. All of whom have a longstanding history of commitment to Ukrainian music and are sought after performers. Joining them in their mission are musicologist Leah Batstone and entrepreneur Alex Gamota. An educational series is also being developed. \nUMI is presented by Vira + Friends\, a non-profit corporation under the auspices of the Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston\, a 501(c)(3).
