Waves of sound feature many instrumental solos with a prominent role throughout for the solo violin. Our very own talented Concertmaster\, Scott Moore\, will be featured in this performance. The German-Jewish composer Paul Hindemith was newly settled in New York in 1951 when he transformed his sketches of a ballet based on themes by Carl Maria von Weber into his “American Symphony”.

SUMMARY:COMING TO AMERICA concert
DESCRIPTION:COMING TO AMERICA\nSATURDAY\, APRIL 26\, 2025 | 7:30PM\nPRE-CONCERT CONDUCTOR’S TALK AT 6:30PM\nSponsored by Kip Connor & Linh Vong. Pipa soloist is sponsored by Bin Wu and Family in recognition of the Chinese American Association of Lexington. \nHewitt | The Battle of Trenton\nWu\, Wang\, Liu | Little Sisters of the Prairie\nWu\, Liu | Spring River Flowers and Moonlight Night\n-Cao Yue\, pipa\nDecruck | Symphonie Orientale\nÓ Riada | Mise Éire \nOur season finale opens with James Hewitt’s The Battle of Trenton and explores the attitudes\, mistakes and reasons people emigrated to America. Those stories are represented through the music immigrants brought with them\, enriching our nation despite the challenges they faced. While the stories are as varied as was America’s attitude toward immigrants\, these stories are important because all those who came to America looked for a new beginning and hope for the future — which has been America’s promise.

SUMMARY:Coming to America: with Jonathan McPhee
DESCRIPTION:The history of immigration to the United States has been complex and\, at times\, brutal. Our country has welcomed immigrants and\, at other times\, excluded certain people as the new American culture has developed. Today\, we often describe the United States as a melting pot\, but that has been contentious. The United States is a unique experiment. What is different about our country as opposed to others with a multicultural population? With the international common language of music as a guide to our history\, what can we discover about ourselves? \nLexington Symphony’s Music Director Jonathan McPhee has conducted orchestras all over the world from South America to Europe\, and China. What he brings to Lexington with the Lexington Symphony is great music that––during this period of reflection on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution––illustrates the cultural richness immigrants have infused into our communities and society. \nAttendance is on a first-come basis. SUMMARY:The Fight for Freedom Concert by Lexington Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Hindemith | Mathis der Maler\nVaughan Williams | Sea Symphony\nAaron Engebreth\, baritone\nMichelle Trainor\, soprano\nNew World Chorale \nThis program focuses on the fight. The Hindemith piece is built around Mathis the Painter’s Fight for Freedom in the 16th Century. One could say it was Hindemith’s thinly veiled protest against what the Nazis were doing in WW2. Hindemith based this work on the triptych painted by Mathias Grunewald in his struggle for artistic freedom in the 16th Century during the repressive policies of the Protestant Reformation. The parallel was all too easily recognized by the Nazis\, and Hindemith escaped to the USA with his life. Ralph Vaughan Williams selected verses from American poet\, Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” for the first three movements and from his “Passage to India” for the last movement of his Sea Symphony. Whitman uses images of brave sailors exploring the vast oceans as a colorful metaphor for the voyage through life of the human soul.

SUMMARY:Intro the Thaw
DESCRIPTION:Over 40 years ago\, park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent collective years of his life exploring Arctic North America. After three decades away\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes.  The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press). These alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of history as well as the natural landscape.\n\n\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers
