A Brief History: What Happened in 1775

Long before Patriots’ Day was a holiday, April 19, 1775, marked a pivotal moment in American history. On that dawn in Lexington, colonial militia, known as the Minute Men, faced British regulars on the town’s Battle Green. The clash that followed is often called the “shot heard ’round the world,” signaling the start of the Revolutionary War.

Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride

On the night of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere and William Dawes rode from Boston to warn Patriot leaders that British troops were marching to seize arms and arrest revolutionaries. Revere’s ride culminated in Lexington just before midnight and set the stage for the next morning’s confrontation.

The Battle of Lexington

Just before sunrise on April 19, Captain John Parker and Lexington’s militia confronted approaching British troops on the Battle Green. Although the exact first shot is debated, the brief skirmish left several militia dead or wounded and ignited the larger conflict between Britain and its American colonies.
