Marquis de Lafayette was a prominent French figure during the American Revolution. He was born into the French aristocracy in 1757 and served as the personal guard of the King of France until he developed an interest in the philosophical ideals of liberty. At around 20 years of age, he arrived in America to offer his military leadership and services to the Continental Congress. He was then commissioned as a major general in the Continental Army and soon after became a member of General George Washington’s staff. In 1781, Lafayette returned to France and fought for liberty in the French Revolution.
