150 Years of Blooms! America’s Oldest Garden Club
Celebrates a Historic Milestone in Lexington on November 19, 2026
LEXINGTON, MA — A historic milestone is blooming right under our noses! The Lexington Field & Garden Club is officially celebrating its 150th anniversary, marking a century and a half of cultivating beauty, community, and growth in town.
Founded in 1876, this passionate group has grown into the oldest federated garden club in the entire United States. Today, it boasts more than 300 active members who continue to transform Lexington into a vibrant, living canvas. From hands-on civic planting to hosting spectacular garden tours and highly anticipated plant sales, club members work tirelessly to keep our community beautiful. They also bring educational programs and expert guest speakers to monthly meetings.
For members looking to dive deeper, specialized subgroups—including Morning Study, Monday Evening, Wednesday Workshop, Garden Party, and Thursday Evening—offer intimate settings for live demonstrations, nursery trips, and illustrated talks.
If you have ever admired the lush landscapes around town, you have likely seen the club’s hard work in action. Members proudly nurture iconic local landmarks, including:
• Public Parks & Gathering Spaces: Emery Park, the Minuteman Statue grounds, the Cary Library gardens, and a majority of the town’s traffic islands.
• Historic Properties: The Hancock-Clarke Herb Garden, the Munroe Tavern Colonial Flower Garden, the Antique Rose Garden, the Garden of Native Flowers, and St. Brigid’s Mary Garden.
As the Lexington Field & Garden Club digs into its historic 150th year, its original mission of education, service, and friendship remains stronger than ever. Backed by a talented and enthusiastic membership, the club steps into the future with excitement and anticipation for the generations of gardeners to come!
Take time to see our 150th Anniversary displays at the Senior Community Center during October and at Cary Library during November.
