Mine Be The Lips features Vira Slywotzky, an amazing contralto and Cambridge-native, and pianist David Sytkowski. Through song and spoken word, they amplify women’s voices in the fight for freedom through time across the globe, including the United States and other countries.

This carefully curated program, which has been performed in Paris, France and New York City, celebrates freedom and the diverse output of female composers of the past who have been overlooked and under-programmed because of their gender and the works of innovative female composers of the present. The songs have been selected both for their beauty and for their power to transport listeners. It features music and words by Maria Szymanowska, Silvia Filus, Poldowski, Amy Beach, Stefania Turkewich, Sheila Silver, Vivian Fung, Lori Laitman, Emily Dickinson, and others. The cabaret-style program will feature American, Chinese, French, Persian, and Ukrainian songs.

Presented by Vira + Friends, co-presented by Lexington Music School and LexSeeHer. Supported in part by a grant from the Lexington Council for the Arts, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Additional support provided by Artwine, Bear Witness and CAAL.

About Vira + Friends
Vira + Friends was founded in May 2018 with the intent of bringing people together to enjoy the live performance of music written for voice and piano. Since that time, the musical celebration has become a multiform concert series with the expanded missions of developing audiences for classical music and providing a platform for composers traditionally neglected by the Western canon. Vira + Friends thrives on partnering with organizations such as the Billion Oyster Project and Razom for Ukraine, promoting their work and fundraising for them through themed concerts. Two exciting developments of the past year include the launch of a long term international project presenting the works of women composers past and present and the formation of the Ukrainian Music Initiative. Vira + Friends is a nonprofit corporation under the auspices of the Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston, a 501(c)(3).
