Circa early 1700s. A wounded British soldier was left here on the retreat on April 19, 1775. Coffins were manufactured in the building’s cellar, which originally opened directly onto Massachusetts Avenue. In later years, the Downing family owned the house and manufactured wagon wheels here. One of their sons moved to Concord, N.H., and established the company which designed and manufactured the stagecoach known as the Concord Coach. Now a private residence, this house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Externally viewable year-round, no public tours available.
