5 Fun Facts about the Town of Lexington

Lexington is a bustling town filled with a lot of history. Here are five fun facts to know about it.

1. Lexington is Home to One of the Oldest Public Libraries in MA

Cary Memorial Library was established in 1868 and opened to the public in 1869. Today, the library’s collection includes more than 350,000 items across print and digital formats. You’ll also find a large collection of books about Lexington during the Revolutionary War.

2. Lexington was initially a Farming Town 

Lexington had its first settlers in 1642, who made the town a farming community. The town became part of Cambridge in 1691, and it was officially incorporated in 1713. While the area is known for its residential and suburban characteristics, farming did play an important role in Lexington’s economy. 3. Paul Revere was Captured Near Lexington

Paul Revere was ordered by Revolutionary War hero and military officer Dr. Joseph Warren to warn the colonial militia that British forces were moving from Boston to make their attack in Lexington and Concord. However, Revere was captured on the Battle Road Trail, which runs through Lexington, Lincoln, and Concord. You can visit the Battle Road Trail at Minute Man National Historical Park

4. Lexington is a Great Place to Birdwatch 

Willard’s Woods in Lexington is a great place to find birds. The 100-acre conservation land offers three miles of trails, open meadows, pine groves, and wetlands where you can view gorgeous pine trees that house various types of birds. 5. The Lexington Militia included a Range of Ages

According to the Massachusetts law during the colonial period, almost all able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 60 were required to serve in the militia and keep arms. This means that the Lexington militia consisted of men of various ages, physical abilities, and skill.
